In 1767, under Spanish colonial rule, royal commissioners surveyed and distributed narrow strips of land along the Rio Grande. These land grants—porciones—were intentionally designed so that each settler had direct access to water, the most valuable resource in the region. Stretching inland from the river, these tracts created a structured and sustainable way of building community in an otherwise rugged frontier.
